Our Relationship with McDonald’s

From the opening of the first Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia, the entire McDonald’s system—owner/operators, suppliers, employees, and customers—has embraced our mission as its own. For more than 50 years, their commitment has helped us grow from a single House supporting a handful of families into a global network of family-centered programs serving more than seven million children and families each year.

A Lasting Partnership Bringing Comfort and Care to Families

Today, McDonald’s remains our largest and most steadfast Mission Partner. Their support—ranging from financial contributions and volunteerism to board leadership and media resources—continues to strengthen our programs and help us provide stability, comfort, and the healing power of togetherness. We are deeply grateful to McDonald’s for more than five decades of keeping families close.

While the McDonald’s system is our largest corporate partner, Ronald McDonald House Norfolk is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. No single company can fully fund the growth needed to support every family who needs us. We rely on the generosity of our broader community and greatly appreciate contributions of any kind—financial gifts, in-kind donations, volunteer hours, or fundraising support. Together, we make a meaningful difference for children and families when they need it most.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I stay at Ronald McDonald House Norfolk?

Families who have not previously stayed at the Ronald McDonald House must be referred by a qualified professional at the partnering medical facility where their child is receiving treatment. A referral is required for all first-time stays. Ronald McDonald House Norfolk provides accommodations for families with children aged 21 and under.

Our programs are supported primarily by the generosity of individual donors, community organizations, and businesses. These contributions allow to provide a comfortable, supportive environment for families during medical crises.

Local McDonald’s owner/operators generously support portions of our annual operating costs. However, the majority of our funding comes from individual donors and corporate partners beyond the McDonald’s system.

Families stay at no cost, though those who are able may make a voluntary donation of $25 per day. No family is ever turned away due to an inability to contribute. Your donations help cover the difference and keep our doors open to all who need us.

Families with children from birth through age 21 receiving treatment at nearby hospitals or medical facilities may be eligible. Additional guidelines apply—please review our House Policies for more information.

Length of stay varies based on each child’s medical needs. Families may stay from one night to several months.

There are many ways to make an impact—through financial gifts, in-kind donations, volunteer service, or hosting a fundraiser. Your support ensures families have a place to stay together during their child’s medical care.
